What’s the Difference Between a Sea-Doo and a WaveRunner?

Personal watercraft or PWC is perfect for boaters who have a need for speed and prefer an adrenaline rush over cruising peacefully on the water. Two common types of personal watercrafts are the Sea-Doo and WaveRunner. While a Sea-Doo and a WaveRunner look similar, there are key differences between them.

What Is a Sea-Doo?

The brand Sea-Doo developed its first sit-down watercraft in the 1960s. Sea-Doo, which is part of Bombardier Recreational Products, eventually withdrew from the industry due to competition from brands such as Yamaha. Twenty years later, the company returned with new models to successfully compete against Yamaha and Kawasaki. Sea-Doo is a popular PWC due to its affordable prices and innovative accessories.

What Is a WaveRunner?

Yamaha released their first WaveRunner in 1986. They built it to be fun, reliable and functional, and over the years it has continued to live up to those standards. WaveRunners are a sit-down PWC and can accommodate one or two people depending on the model. It was built for both cruising and speed. Even though the WaveRunner places a strong emphasis on performance, it offers plenty of storage space and other luxurious touches.

Sea-Doo vs. WaveRunner: Which One Is Right for Me?

Both the Sea-Doo and the WaveRunner come in various models, styles and colors. Deciding between the two main types of PWCs and their many options can feel daunting, but it really just comes down to personal preference.

PWCs tend to be divided into six main categories:

  • Stand up
  • Recreational
  • Recreational light
  • Performance
  • Luxury
  • Tow-sports

While researching Sea-Doos and WaveRunners, you may come across these categories. What a PWC is designed for will influence how it operates and handles on the water. For example, if you are interested in taking your PWC out a couple of times during the summer for casual boating with your friends, a recreational model would most likely suit your needs better than a luxury or performance model.

In addition to considering what your needs are with your PWC, be sure to think about other aspects like whether you’d prefer to ride alone or with passengers. Another important consideration is if you want a sit-down or a stand-up model. Deciding which you’d feel more comfortable operating can help you narrow down your choices.

Of course, one of the best ways to figure out your preference is to test drive some models!
