How to Clean Your Jet Ski

On a hot summer day, nothing beats zipping around on the water with your Jet Ski. If you want to keep enjoying your Jet Ski for years to come, though, it’s important to take preventive steps to keep it in good working condition. Regularly cleaning and maintaining your Jet Ski ensures you can hit the water summer after summer without experiencing any issues.

The Importance of Jet Ski Maintenance

While cleaning and maintaining your Jet Ski helps maximize your investment and prevent costly repairs, it’s also important for ensuring your safety whenever you are having fun on the water.

For example, if you frequently use your Jet Ski on salt water and don’t regularly clean it, the salt can corrode the fiberglass. Over time, parts can also tighten, wear out or break, which could put you at risk for various malfunctions and leave you stranded out in the middle of a lake.

How to Wash and Maintain Your Jet Ski

While there are some basic preventive measures every Jet Ski owner should take, always read through your owner’s manual before you start cleaning and maintaining your Jet Ski. Each Jet Ski is unique, and you most likely will find model-specific instructions inside your manual.

Before you get on, check your Jet Ski to ensure nothing is broken or damaged. Also, inspect your fuel level and top it off if necessary. Regardless of whether you ride in salt water or fresh water, you’ll have to flush your Jet Ski after each ride. This will remove the harmful salt, algae and sand, and prevent the engine from getting damaged and corroded. It will only take a few minutes to hose down the outside and flush the internal systems.

Make sure everything gets hosed down — including the accessories, motor and fuel tank. Also, remove any standing water inside the Jet Ski and gently wipe it down with a cloth.

How Often Should You Clean Your Jet Ski?

A typical maintenance schedule for your Jet Ski should include:

  • Seasonal maintenance. Each season, you’ll want to thoroughly clean your Jet Ski, remove the plugs and lubricate the parts.
  • Annual maintenance. Change your Jet Ski’s oil and filter each year.
  • Winterization. To get your Jet Ski ready for freezing temperatures, add a fuel stabilizer. You can also put a cover on top to keep it protected when it’s not in use.
